Jobic Le Masson (piano) | Peter Giron (bass) | John Betsch (drums)Piano trio, in the traditional jazz sense, has often meant a leader accompanied by a competent rhythm section, showcasing the talents of one individual. Here, although the qualities of tradition are clearly heard, especially melody and swing, Peter Giron and John Betsch in no way inhabit subsidiary roles. Rather they are a company of three participating in intelligent conversations. That they all find themselves together in Paris is fortuitous, coming as they do from such diverse origins, and being able to maintain a trio of this quality for an extended period of time, close to a miracle.Jobic Le Masson, the youngest of them, born in Étampes near Paris in 1968, studied music engineering at Berklee School in Boston. He graduated in 1990 and returned to Paris. It was in his six years in the Boston area where he became enamoured by jazz music, sitting in occasionally at the local clubs, and in the process discovering the music of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, whose influences linger to this very day. |
